Honea Express

We saw Spiderman 3 last night. It was very good. Not Spiderman 2 good, but worth the money just the same. We had spent a couple of hours at BJ’s prior, so we were primed, and the fact that the movie was sold out (duh) just added to the concert atmosphere. I love seeing blockbuster movies on opening day. There is something to be said for a crowd that is obviously very excited for the film. There is a buzz in the audience, people clap and laugh and are just tickled to be there.

The only thing I can really say about the movie that bugged me is that Kirsten Dunst cannot act her way out of paper sack (no offense Fandango). The girl is a drain on the screen. Her presence is just weak. Truth be told, she’s not even pretty enough to play MJ, but that aside, her acting is just barely better than that of Cameron Diaz, which, if you’ve seen The Holiday, is awful, almost a movie killer. A movie faces enough obstacles in life, it shouldn’t be burdened by some highly paid parasite.

Speaking of parasites, if you’ve read Spidey comics then you’ll know that the story used in the movie is nothing like what “really” happened. What else is new in the Marvel movie universe? Don’t let that get you down. It works for what it is and I didn’t give it a second thought.

Once again I ate too much popcorn, plus I totally abused the “self buttering” option, meaning I added my own butter to the popcorn, not to myself. That kind of abuse cost extra.

Overall, I would give it a thumbs up. It’s a great kick-off to what promises to be a great summer for cinema.

Which leads me to the upcoming films. Every preview we saw was for a sequel, with the exception of Across the Universe, which pulled heavily on my Beatle strings.

Here is a partial list of the movies that are coming out this summer: Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Shrek 3, Rush Hour 3, Bourne Identity 3, Ocean’s 13 (3), Diehard 4, a new Harry Potter, The Fantastic Four 2, Duck (okay, just making sure you’re paying attention), a sequel to Bruce Almighty . . . get the picture(s)?

The thing is that all of the above movies look pretty good. Basically, if you like the respective series thus far, you will be all giggly for these next installments. I realize that every summer we get more and more sequels, so this may not be the most we will ever see, but damn, it’s a lot.

Guess I’ll be seeing you at the Netflix queue movies.
